Mercadona, a 100% Spanish and family-run chain of supermarkets is set to start the second stage of its Albalat dels Sorells (Valencia) project by building its new offices in the municipality. In this way, the company consolidates a project it started in 2012 with the construction of the Data Processing Centre (CPD) and the Services Centre, which were both inaugurated in 2014.

The expected investment for this second stage is 80 million Euro, and part of the resources will be destined towards optimising the space around the offices as much as possible to guarantee their sustainability. For the time being, the building works have started with the first of the earthmoving, but in total, it is expected that some 150 building works suppliers will be collaborating in the project, employing some 600 people.

The construction of the new sustainable offices will take place in a plot of more than 25,000 square metres, and it is expected to be finished by 2021. The objective is to add three buildings and an underground parking lot capable of accommodating around 1,000 employees.

New environmentally sustainable offices

In collaboration with ERRE Arquitectura, Mercadona is set to undertake this project making the most of the orientation and natural lighting of the surrounding areas. In this way, employees will enjoy more comfortable, naturally lit spaces, while the power consumed by lighting is reduced. Furthermore, by opening three large courtyards, light will seep through into the underground parking facilities, making them more pleasant and reducing energy consumption while providing shelter from the rain.

As for the exterior, the buildings will be surrounded by green and leisure areas that stimulate the natural circulation of air. The company will be favouring gardened courtyards in its new offices, as these singular spaces absorb pollution and provide oxygen, which are measures that improve the comfort of employees. In addition, with the objective of using water responsibly, the use of rainwater has been planned for irrigating said green areas.

Lastly, the offices’ interior design will be drawing from the open spaces, all of which will be interconnected and featuring simple interiors that make use of solar energy to generate a work atmosphere that encourages productivity and creativity.
