We have been implementing our own environmental management system for years. This system is based on four main areas: logistics optimisation, energy efficiency, waste management, and partnerships throughout the supply chain.
Environmental management system
Mercadona implements its environmental management system to identify the areas of its activity with the greatest environmental impact with a view to making improvements and, in this way, responding to current environmental challenges.
Based on the premise of “Transporting more with fewer resources”, Mercadona’s logistics management focuses on optimising each journey, constantly renewing and modernising its fleet, and searching for more sustainable modes of transport with alternative fuels and strategies to improve last-mile logistics.
The principle of using the least amount of energy required drives all of Mercadona’s processes. The company is immersed in a process of radical transformation, including the renovation of its stores in line with a more efficient and sustainable model and the incorporation of several measures and technologies to help to reduce and optimise energy consumption.
As a food retailer, Mercadona prioritises the prevention of waste production in its processes, placing special emphasis on minimising food waste. It is also making an effort to reduce the use of plastic and to improve the sustainability of Mercadona brand packaging by seeking the best solutions in accordance with criteria established by the European Union.
Mercadona works closely with several national and international organisations aimed at sharing best practices, mutual learning, and making progress in sustainability with a firm focus on the supply chain at all times.
