Mercadona, a company of physical supermarkets and online sales, started operations at a new logistics centre in the Los Gavilanes industrial park in the town of Getafe, Madrid. Putting this facility into operation has created 426 jobs, within a total staff of 578 people who are currently working in the Logistics Centre, who have all been trained to carry out their responsibilities.

This new warehouse, which is now fully operational, supplements the activity that has been carried out at the Ciempozuelos logistics centre for more than 10 years now. It will serve 89 stores in the provinces of Madrid, Guadalajara and Cuenca, as well as the “Hive”, Mercadona’s online warehouse, which is also located in Getafe. With this major investment the company seeks to guarantee and strengthen its service to the stores in the central area of the country.

This new distribution centre required an investment of 28 million euros and it spans 96,000 square metres. It houses a dry warehouse with a built area of 47,000 square metres, and a fresh warehouse which includes cold and frozen sections, with a built area of 19,300 square metres.

This investment effort reaffirms the company's commitment to the Community of Madrid, where it currently has 190 stores. The company has also continued to solidify its business project in this area, where in 2020 it opened 7 new stores, closed another 5 because they did not comply with its new quality standards, and renovated 27 to adapt them to the new Efficient Store Model, ending the year with 142 supermarkets under this new model. Furthermore, it continued implementing its new “Ready-to-Eat” section, available in 94 supermarkets at the end of 2020, and making progress on its Global Fresh project.

Mercadona in the Community of Madrid

Mercadona created 595 new stable and high-quality jobs and ended the year with a staff of 11,410 people in this Autonomous Community. Likewise, in 2020 the company invested 172.5 million euros in contributing to the economic activation of the region, and made 2,334 million euros in purchases from local suppliers, working with approximately 58 Totaler Suppliers.

Furthermore, the company maintains a social commitment to the residents of the areas in which it is present and operates, and last year it donated 870 tonnes of essential products to a total of 17 soup kitchens and charities in the Community of Madrid, 115% more than in 2019.
