  • The Seville City Council grants a building permit to the supermarket chain, which plans to launch its new online shopping service at the end of 2022.
  • Mercadona’s investment in this project will exceed 14 million euros.

Seville City Council's Planning Department has granted Mercadona, a company of physical supermarkets and online sales, a building permit for the construction of a warehouse exclusively for online sales to support its Internet shopping project in Seville. The construction of this warehouse, which the company calls a “Hive”, will begin in January and will require an investment of 14 million euros. Mercadona plans to start its operations there in late 2022, and once it is operational it will serve the city of Seville and neighbouring towns.

Mercadona will build its exclusive warehouse for online sales on a 30,220 square metre lot in the Higuerón Sur area, which was awarded to the company for 10.8 million euros through a public tendering process run by Seville City Council's Planning Department.

Mercadona currently has three similar facilities located in Valencia, Barcelona and Madrid. The latter became operational in April 2020, in the middle of the lockdown, when the company intensified its digital innovation process to stay connected to its customers’ needs.
