  • As of February 2004, all plastic pallets used by Mercadona are manufactured using 100% recycled plastic.
  • The use of these pallets not only reduces waste but also promotes the circular economy.

As part of its commitment to sustainability and the circular economy, Mercadona has worked closely with Logifruit, a Totaler Supplier of logistics services, to implement significant measures throughout the supply chain. One example of this are the circular-use plastic pallets that have been used in its supply chain for more than 20 years.

Key features of Mercadona pallets:

  • 100% recycled plastic: As of February 2004, all plastic pallets used by Mercadona are manufactured using 100% recycled plastic and are themselves recyclable.
  • Waste reduction: The use of 100% recycled plastic contributes towards reducing plastic waste and promoting the circular economy.
  • Guaranteed food quality and safety: These pallets are designed to be easily sanitised and preserve the quality and safety of the products they transport.
  • Versatility: These pallets are used in all areas of the Mercadona supply chain, from the supplier to delivery to stores, as well as in inverse logistics, where empty packaging, coffee capsules or cardboard boxes are returned to the warehouse. They are also used to transport machines and equipment.
  • Stability and durability: These pallets are made from plastic, a resistant, stable and impermeable material that eliminates the presence of nails or splinters. They are also modular and repairable; it is very easy to swap a broken wheel for a new one in the same logistics centre and send the broken part to be recycled.

The use of these pallets throughout the supply chain for more than 20 years is a firm demonstration of Mercadona’s commitment to efficiency, sustainability and commercially responsible practices. Another clear example of the circular economy in the company are the green boxes for fruit and vegetables, which can be reused more than 120 times, are also 100% recyclable and also help reduce waste. Furthermore, because they are foldable, they lead to 107,072 fewer lorry journeys each year, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions.
