  • Thanks to the commitment of the company’s more than 100,000 employees to improving operations and efficiency, more and more customers are choosing to shop at Mercadona and the company’s market share is constantly increasing.
  • Since this pioneering initiative was introduced by the company’s shareholders in 2001, a total of more than 5,580 million euros have been paid out.
  • In line with the company’s profit-sharing policy, the Management Committee has decided to include an additional half bonus alongside the standard objective bonus awarded each year.

In line with the company’s profit-sharing policy, the Mercadona Management Committee has decided to award an additional half bonus to the more than 100,000 people that make up the company, as well as the performance-related bonus that is traditionally paid out each year. This means that the company stands to distribute a total of 600 million euros among its workforce, 50% more than in 2023 when a total of 405 million euros was shared out.

Since Mercadona's shareholders implemented this initiative in 2001, the company has shared more than 5,580 million euros with its employees. This figure reflects the company’s commitment to mutual benefit and shared growth.

In March each year, from the moment they join the company, employees receive a bonus on their payslips, equivalent to their monthly salary, if they have achieved their targets agreed at the beginning of the year. This rises to twice their monthly salary once they have been with the company for five years; and this year, they will also receive a bonus equivalent to half their monthly salary.

This measure makes it clear that Mercadona’s employees are the main people responsible for the company’s success, who have proved once again this year that they are the biggest asset for the “Bosses” (as the company internally calls its customers). Their commitment to continuous improvement in operations and efficiency has led to the company having the most affordable and highest-quality Shopping Trolley Menu on the market, which more people are opting for. This in turn means that more and more people are choosing to do their shopping at Mercadona, further consolidating the company's growth and increasing its market share.

Mercadona sources stress the importance of this decision because: “The exceptional daily commitment of Mercadona's more than 100,000 employees to improving the experience of our “Bosses" and the quality of our products, as well as the continuous implementation of innovative technological improvements to make our processes more efficient and facilitate our routine job, is why this year we deserve an extra half of our monthly salary as a bonus, on top of our usual bonus, which is equivalent to one or two monthly payments depending on length of service”.

A pioneer in work-life balance and always moving forward

Mercadona’s Human Resources policy is focused on achieving a positive balance between work, personal life and family for its workforce. In 2020, in Spain, the company took the pioneering step to adopt a policy of five days on and two days off (5+2), with at least 8 weekends off work per year. This policy is being progressively extended over the course of 2024 and, by 2025, it will also apply to employees at the company’s hives (warehouses exclusively dedicated to online sales) and logistics centres.

Employees at the Logistics Centre in Ribarroja (Valencia) have ensured that the fire in July 2023 has had a minimal impactThanks to the commitment of all the people who work at the Logistics Centre in Ribarroja (Valencia), the fire in the dry products warehouse on 5 July 2023 has had a minimal impact on our service to “The Boss”.
