Mercadona now employs more than 100,000 people, all on high-quality permanent contracts

Mercadona has reached a new milestone: a workforce of more than 100,000 people, all on high-quality permanent contracts, reflecting the company’s firm and unwavering commitment to acquiring talent as a key factor in its project. Notably, the physical supermarket and online sales chain closed 2023 with a workforce of 104,000 people - 98,700 in Spain and 5,300 in Portugal - having created 5,000 jobs over the course of the year.

The expansion of the workforce has stood out in recent years, particularly since the end of 2016 with the launch of Mercadona's brutal transformation, which seeks to establish a more digital, productive and sustainable company model. Since then, the company has created 25,000 new jobs, which represents an increase of 32%. “We are very proud to be able to say that we are now a family of more than 100,000 people, whose commitment has allowed us to overcome significant challenges despite the uncertainty of recent years,” declared Paula Llop, Mercadona’s Social Responsibility director.

Concerning the make-up of the workforce at Mercadona, the largest percentage (39%) are aged 40 to 49, with 29% aged between 30 and 39, 16% older than 50 and 16% under 29 years old. As a supermarket firm, most of the workforce (82%) work in stores, 12% in logistics and 6% in offices. And while 61% of employees are women, the number of female managers in the company has also grown, coming to 47% at the end of last year.

Fully aware that its employees are the customer's biggest asset and essential for the business’ growth, Mercadona is committed to offering stable, high-quality employment with above-average salaries for the sector. Furthermore, to maintain the buying power of its employees, as part of its Total Quality Model, this year, the company has once year improved its basic salary and existing add-ons with a pay increase in line with the CPI, taking the company’s minimum gross salary to 1,553 euros per month (17% above the National Minimum Wage).

Added to this is a human resources policy committed to training, career progression and developing talent. With respect to training, on the 2023 balance sheet, an impressive 110 million euros were allocated to consolidating and improving the knowledge and skills of the workforce, resulting in more than 3.4 million training hours. Similarly, 2,221 employees have been promoted to positions of greater responsibility, proof that Mercadona is a business that allows its team to grow at the same pace as the company.
