  • Works are planned to start in the first half of 2023 with completion expected in 2025.

Mercadona, a physical supermarket and online sales company, is investing over €60M in the optimisation and modernisation of its fresh produce warehouse at the logistics centre located in Riba-roja de Túria (Valencia). The company, which plans to begin works in the first half of 2023, will collaborate with over 130 works suppliers employing over 800 people during construction.

The planned changes will lead to improvements to processes, installations and job posts. Specifically, the warehouse will grow in size from 23,000m2 to 40,000m2, increasing efficiency and production capacity. Communal areas will be improved and the automated preparation system known as PPG (Picking Bridge Crane system) will be installed, which will minimise overexertion by employees. Additionally, as part of the company’s commitment to the environment, 7,500 solar panels will be installed on the roof of the warehouse, meaning that 15% of the centre’s total energy consumption will come from renewable energy.

During the period of over two years planned for the renovation of this cold warehouse, which once operational, will ultimately take on the production carried out at the company’s warehouse in Paterna (Valencia), some employees will be temporarily relocated to other areas of the company; in particular from the logistics centre located in Parc Sagunt (Valencia), which will also temporarily take on the production of the Riba-roja de Túria and Paterna warehouses.

A quality logistics network

To be able to provide optimum service and guarantee efficiency in its activity, Mercadona has a quality distribution network: over 1.4 million square metres that the company optimises to “manufacture more with fewer resources”, through processes and strategies that pursue a balance between environmental and economic efficiency, which reduce the impact on the environment and on cities, and at the same time minimise the impact on each area and district where it is present, through responsible protocols and its commitment to innovation and cutting-edge technology.

Mercadona’s logistics network is made up of a total of 16 operational logistics centres, 2 satellite warehouses and 2 regulating warehouses. From this network, Mercadona supplies over 1,600 supermarkets that it has in Spain and Portugal, led by a team of 10,700 professionals whose effort, involvement and constant adaptation make it possible to respond to the needs of the “Bosses” (customers).
