The supermarket company Mercadona is continuing with its expansion plan in Portugal, where it will open 10 more supermarkets in 2023, the first of which will open in Marco de Canaveses in May.

Almost four years after its first opening in Portugal in July 2019, with a view to continuing its expansion project, Mercadona will double its investment in the country up to 280 million euros in 2023, allocated towards the construction of the future Almeirim Logistics Centre and the opening of new stores.

These new stores continue to demonstrate the chain's firm commitment in Portugal and will create around 650 new, stable, high-quality jobs over the course of the year, with permanent contracts from day one.

Mercadona in Portugal

The company opened its first supermarket on 2 July 2019 in Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia and currently has 39 stores in the districts of Porto, Braga, Aveiro, Viana do Castelo, Setúbal, Santarém, Viseu, Leiria and Lisbon.

With the opening of 10 stores in 2022, the company achieved a sales volume of 737 million euros and contributed 93 million euros in taxes through the Portuguese company Irmãdona Supermercados, with headquarters in Vila Nova de Gaia. Furthermore, it closed the year with a team of 3,500 employees and having made a total investment of 140 million euros.

As part of its objective of sharing with Society part of what it receives from it, in 2022, Mercadona increased its donations to social organisations, reaching more than 70 institutions with a total of 1,900 tonnes of essential products, which are delivered in districts where it has a presence.
