Mercadona allocates €150M to reducing the prices of its products again

15 july 2024
  • This new reduction, which, in addition to the previous price drop implemented in February, bringing the total number of products reduced in 2024 up to 1,000, is the result of the company’s commitment to translating cost price reductions into RRP reductions and strengthening its sales strategies.
  • “The Bosses” (customers) will see savings in their shopping basket worth up to €150 per year.
  • The company will continue to reduce prices for the rest of the year while maintaining quality and ensuring the sustainability of the entire food supply chain.

Mercadona, the physical supermarket and online sales company, has once again reduced prices in its selection, bringing the total number of products reduced in 2024 up to 1,000. As a result of its commitment to reducing selling prices when cost prices fall and strengthening its sales strategies, the company has allocated a total of €150M to optimisations, which, without affecting quality, will allow “The Boss” (customer) to continue to benefit from this change and see savings of up to €150 per year in their shopping basket.

These efforts, which are necessary for households that place their trust in Mercadona every day, contribute towards offering a high-quality shopping trolley menu at the best possible market price. The products that have been reduced include foods such as fish, bread, pasta and olive oil. In the particular case of olive oil, today, the company has once again reduced the price of its Virgin and Extra Virgin varieties, which, when added to the January reductions on its Soft/Intense, Virgin and Extra Virgin varieties, means that Mercadona has reduced the price of olive oil in its supermarkets by 14% on average.

José Manuel Burguera, Pricing Strategy Director in the company’s Purchasing and Prescription Department, highlights the work being done by its Purchasing departments, specialist suppliers and intersuppliers “to translate cost-price reductions into RRP reductions so the customer can benefit as soon as possible”. In addition, he points out that these reductions would not have been possible “without the management, profitability and productivity efforts that are being made by our 104,000 employees and 3,000 suppliers, because only in this way is it possible to reduce prices in a sustainable manner for the entire chain without affecting quality”.

The company will continue to strengthen its assembly line to identify market opportunities along with its specialist suppliers and intersuppliers.
