Mercadona strengthens its commitment to photovoltaic energy and invests 60 million euros in 2023

  • In 2023, the projection is to increase its capacity for renewable energy generation at 240 stores and at new logistics centres and Hives.
  • A Mercadona store with solar panels saves approximately 20% of its annual energy consumption compared with a store without photovoltaic energy installed, which entails a reduction of approximately 30 tonnes of CO2 per supermarket.
  • After investing over 14 million euros in 2022 in the installation of new solar panels, reducing emissions of over 3,000 tonnes of CO2.

Mercadona, the physical supermarket and online sales company, strengthens its commitment to photovoltaic energy and plans to invest approximately 60 million euros in 2023 in the installation of solar panels on its roofs, which will significantly increase the reduction of electricity consumption emissions.

Mercadona’s objective is to continue saying “Yes” to caring for the Planet and to increase its renewable energy generation through solar panels, which allow a store with this installation to save approximately 20% of its annual energy consumption compared to a store without this energy source installed, a reduction of approximately 30 tonnes of CO2 per supermarket.

The commitment to obtaining sustainable energy began at some of its stores at the end of 2020. In 2021, the company strengthened its commitment to photovoltaic self-consumption and in 2022, invested 14 million euros in the installation of new solar panels, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by over 3,000 tonnes in a year.

Currently, the supermarket chain is powered by this renewable energy source at 114 stores, 9 logistics centres, 3 Hives (exclusive warehouses for online sales) and in the company's recently opened offices, located in Albalat dels Sorells (Valencia).

At the end of 2023, the company’s projection is to have an approximate total of 350 stores and to increase the number of logistics centres and Hives with solar panels on their roofs. With these sources of power installed, it is expected that energy equivalent to the accumulated annual consumption of 125 stores will be saved.

The objective for 2027, a point that the company has defined on its roadmap with the slogan “whoever has a roof, has a treasure”, is to have self-consumption at over 850 stores and at all its logistics centres and Hives, which will entail electricity savings equivalent to the consumption of 300 stores.
