From April-May until October-November, Mercadona sells seasonal regional potatoes in all its stores in Spain. During this time, potatoes are sourced from the Valencian Community, the Region of Murcia, the Community of Madrid, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalucía, La Rioja, Asturias, Euskadi, Galicia, and the Balearic and Canary Islands.

Mercadona potatoes are found in the Fruit & Vegetable section, in bulk or in 3 and 5 kg bags for white potatoes and 2 kg for red potatoes.

At the end of the 2017 season, Mercadona had purchased a total of 150,000 tonnes of potatoes from Spanish suppliers, 18% more than the season before. This year, Mercadona estimates it will buy 157,000 tonnes of regional potatoes.

How does Mercadona's potato season work

Starting in April and May —depending on the year—, Mercadona offers regional potatoes in its Fruit & Vegetable section. The season lasts until October or November, depending on production. Thus, 80% of all of Mercadona's potatoes are grown in different parts of Spain.

Depending on the season, Mercadona only imports potatoes from other countries from October-November until April-June, due to insufficient production or a production that does not fit our clients' needs.

Within Mercadona's Sustainable Food Chain, which aims to achieve shared growth and sustainability for the primary sector, the company cooperates with 8,600 farmers, 12,000 fishermen and 5,200 stockbreeders, all from Spain.

By supporting Spanish potatoes at Mercadona, the company joins the initiative of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food "Fruits & Vegetables from here and now", which recommends consuming fruits and vegetables regularly since they revitalise the organism thanks to their quality, taste and variety.
