For years Mercadona has had its own environmental management system based on identifying, preventing and reducing the environmental impacts generated in different areas.

Logistics optimisation

Based on the premise of “Transporting more with fewer resources”, Mercadona’s logistics management focuses on optimising each journey, constantly renewing and modernising its fleet, and searching for more sustainable modes of transport with alternative fuels and strategies to improve last-mile logistics.

Energy saving

The principle of using the least amount of energy required drives all of Mercadona’s processes. The company is immersed in a process of radical transformation, including the renovation of its stores in line with a more efficient and sustainable model and the incorporation of several measures and technologies to help to reduce and optimise energy consumption.

Waste management

As a food retailer, Mercadona prioritises the prevention of waste production in its processes, placing special emphasis on minimising food waste. It is also making an effort to reduce the use of plastic and to improve the sustainability of Mercadona brand packaging by seeking the best solutions in accordance with criteria established by the European Union.

Sustainable production and animal welfare

Mercadona has an Animal Welfare Policy that reflects its efforts to guarantee decent conditions throughout an animal's life, as well as food safety and product quality. We work closely with our meat, egg and milk suppliers to ensure animals are cared for at livestock farms and in all processes in compliance with current Animal Welfare legislation.
