Mercadona has completed construction of its logistics centre in the Basque Country, after investing more than 187 million euros in the project and creating 480 stable, high-quality jobs. The logistics centre is located in the Jundiz industrial park in Vitoria-Gasteiz and supplies the supermarkets in the Basque Country, Navarre, La Rioja, Cantabria, and Burgos. Specifically, in 2020 the company created 120 jobs and invested 17 million euros to complete the construction.

Fran Maeztu, Mercadona’s Human Resources Director in the Basque Country, explained that “our main goal in Logistics is to prevent strain on workers so they can do their jobs with full health and safety. Furthermore, following the creation of 120 jobs this year at our Vitoria-Gasteiz logistics centre, we now have a staff of 480 people involved in the project, who are offered stable indefinite contracts, training, and the opportunity for internal promotions”.

Meanwhile, Melika Dezfoli, Coordinator of the Mercadona logistics centre, stated that in 2020 “the new warehouses for refrigerated and dry products were put into operation. The latter is fully automated and eliminates strains across the entire process, from the reception of goods to the loading of the pallets that will be sent to the stores. Products are also guaranteed to be handled correctly, ensuring their quality”.

According to Gorka Díaz, Mercadona’s Director of External Relations in the Basque Country, “this logistics centre demonstrates Mercadona’s involvement in contributing to the economic and social growth of the Basque Country”.

Mercadona has 21 stores in the Basque Country and a staff of 2,045 people with stable high-quality jobs. Its commitment to local products led it to turn over 546 million euros in purchases in 2019, which is 23.5% more than the previous year.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, it has donated 1,326 tonnes of essential products thanks to its partnerships with the Food Banks of Araba, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa and the Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados soup kitchen in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The company's charitable commitment has been strengthened this year as a result of the health crisis, to which the company has responded by increasing its donations to 747 tonnes of essential products during the first six months of the year.
